Bruce Hornsby and the Range was formed by frontman Bruce Hornsby in 1984. The band was signed to RCA records in 1985 and opened up their career with their most successful album to date.

Bruce Hornsby and the Range released their first album in 1986, The Way it Is. The album became a number 3 album and was certified triple platinum. The first single, “Every Little Kiss,” became a number 18 Billboard Top Rock Tracks, and 14 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The next single from Bruce Hornsby and the Range would be their most successful. “The Way It Is” became a number one hit on the Billboard top 100 and Billboard Adult Contemporary, and a number 3 hit on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks. In 1987 the single, “Mandolin Rain” would also be a number one adult contemporary hit.

Bruce Hornsby and the Range’s second and final album of the 1980s was Scenes from the Southside in 1988. The album became a number 5 Billboard and was RIAA certified Platinum. In 1987 they also won a Grammy for Best New Artist.
